Closing the Capital Gap in Silicon Valley

It's no secret that Silicon Valley is largely dominated by men and this reality quickly translates into a lack of venture capital for female entrepreneurs and female led startups.

A Fast Company article exploring why so many women were leaving the world of venture capital offers the following stats:

  • Female-led companies grew 1.5 times faster than the national average from 2007-2013
  • Female-led venture backed firms bring in 12% more revenue than male-led companies
  • Between 2011 and 2013 only 3% of venture backed firms had a female CEO accounting for only $1.5 billion of $50.8 billion total of total capital invested

These statistics are enough to discourage anyone, but the outlook may be better than it initially looks. It is true that many women are leaving their old venture capital posts, but a new wave of female-led firms are starting to take root. The recent launch of #Angels a venture capital fund started by many top level female Twitter executives may be a game changer for women in Silicon Valley. Additionally, Aspect Ventures, 1315 Ventures and Cowboy Ventures among others are female-led venture capital firms establishing their place in California's tech scene, closing the gender gap for funding with the potential to have an outsized impact on the industry.
