Pieter van der Gaag is the interim Executive Director of the Natural Capital Coalition (NCC), a position which he holds until 2 March 2015. Pieter is committed to sustainability and stakeholder engagement since he started his career in 1996 with ANPED, the Northern Alliance for Sustainability. In 1998 he was appointed Executive Director.
He was the NGO focal point for the OECD in the development of the 2000 OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises, and formed a partnership with the United Nations on enabling civil society groups to participate in the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development.
He was instrumental in the formation of the Eco-Equity Coalition, a unique partnership between the world’s largest NGOs and those NGOs represented through organisations such as ANPED in the run-up to the same Johannesburg summit. After ANPED he joined the IUCN National Committee of the Netherlands as Head of External Relations and Communications, supporting the committee in their work with policy, business, and the wider NGO community.
In 2010 he joined Triodos Investment Management as Head of Marketing and Communication, being part of a strong team that significantly grew the Assets under Management of this impact investor.
In March 2014 he started the independent consultancy Niet Onverschillig (Dutch for Not Indifferent), advising organisations on effective stakeholder involvement in processes focussed on achieving sustainable solutions. Among the many initiatives that bring together stakeholders to work on solutions for sustainable societies worldwide, he also served on the stakeholder council of the Global Reporting Initiative from 2001 to 2007, of which in 2003 and 2004 as vice-chair.
Pieter holds a Master’s degree in International Policy Studies, from the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (the Netherlands) and a BA in International Relations from Rhodes College (USA).
