Tata Group: Training Employees and Supporting Communities

Since 2005 Tata Group has been training young people across the world with the aim of developing employability, entrepreneurship and enterprise capabilities through numerous 'skilling' initiatives.

Tata has training initiatives in North America, Europe, China, Africa and the Association of South East Asian Nations. They tailor training to meet the both the needs of the local area, and the skills needed for Tata's core businesses. For example, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) trains unemployed graduates in India in English communication, corporate etiquette and IT competency. Since 2010, 37,000 young people have received training, 15,000 of whom are from recognized castes and tribes and 2,700 of whom are currently employed with TCS.

Sudhakar Gudipati, Tata's General Manager of sustainability at Tata Council for Community Initiatives (TCCI), says that these “programs aim to reach out to the underprivileged and those who have traditionally been denied access to such training, on account of gender, disabilities or ethnicity. The model is scalable, and designed to need decreasing financial support from the Tata Group [over time]”.
